After the army commandeered the radio tower in Burlington, WRKO started running on a loop, beaming out the same prerecorded message for the past three hours:

"Be advised. Until this current threat is neutralized, the city of Boston is under quarantine by orders of the United States Armed Forces and the National Guard. Anyone caught attempting to flee the QZ without presenting themselves for a thorough health screening at one of the established checkpoints first will be considered a potential threat and dealt with severely. Military checkpoints out of the city have been erected at most major thoroughfares crossing the Charles and Neponset Rivers.

"For your safety, a temporary shelter has been established at Hanscom Air Force base near Bedford. We are urging survivors to evacuate to this safe zone. Take only what you need to travel quickly and safely. Food, water, and protection will be provided for you there. Additionally, military convoys will be patrolling Interstate 95, from Burlington to the Massachusetts Turnpike, with orders to assist any survivors they encounter along the way.

"This has been an official notice from the US Army and National Guard. Message repeats..."

Had one of them felt inclined to try switching on the radio, the occupants of Graves' Cadillac might have heard this announcement and altered their plans before reaching the city limits. Nobody did. They drove in silence, too caught up in processing their shock and grief to muster much interest in disc jockeys spinning the tunes of an already bygone era.

The sight of human torches spreading the inferno engulfing Braintree had clamped Tommy's tongue to his tonsils for the first time today. He drove the short trip north along the Southeast Expressway with his head seemingly on autopilot.

In the back seat, Eve Cutler also weathered the trip and the loss of her brother in silence. Sporadically, she would sob and sniffle to herself before going back to staring glumly out the window at the passing scenery.

For his part, Graves was already on his third Lucky Strike. Between Braintree, the horror movie airing on CNN, and the legions of corpses probably still chasing their taillights, he was having a hard time adapting to the steamroller of shit plowing over them.

And now we have to deal with this fuckamaroll, he thought, spitting off the side of the bridge into the Neponset.

They were parked on the south end of the I-93 bridge spanning the Neponset River Estuary and a fleet of armored personnel carriers blocking both lanes on the Keystone Shoreline side. A bullet-riddled Pontiac burned halfway across the span, straddling the concrete dividers separating the interstate. Judging by the state of the vehicle, Graves suspected the driver probably didn't last long enough to realize that his attempted run at the blockade had failed miserably.

"Ain't that a bitch?" Tommy cursed behind him.

Graves turned to fix his gaze on the direction that piqued his young companion's interest. Across the river, he could make out two things. The first was a mass of undead roaming through the waterside park from nearby Cedar Grove Cemetery.
